The Yeomen of the Guard or The Merryman and His Maid

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrint

The Hull Savoyards are to perform Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Yeomen of the Guard on 16th to 18th June 2011 at the Middleton Hall, Cottingham Road, Hull.

The combined magic of Sullivan’s music and Gilbert’s wit with outstanding costumes, a full orchestral accompaniment and a colourful setting on the Tower Green (will be) a night to remember.

The story centres on Colonel Fairfax condemned to be executed for sorcery and on a simple court jester who loses the love of his life to the condemned and then reprieved hero ‘Fairfax’  There are increasingly complicated attempts to spare Fairfax’s  life and to avoid his estate falling into the hands of a scurrilous relative. In this years production will Fairfax and Jack Point meet the same fate as previous productions.  As with many Gilbert plots the plans involve marriages and a healthy smattering of humour but unusually the show closes with the unrequited love of one of the principal characters.
