The Gondoliers - Auditions Thursday 1st February 2018

Hull Savoyards have just completed auditions for the June 2018 production of The Gondoliers and are facing the problem that many societies have had to face for this inspiring G&S operetta which is full of wonderful music, colourful costumes and is to be accompanied by the Kingston Savoy Orchestra.
When Gilbert was preparing The Gondoliers he was so annoyed by the complaints of company members that they did not have big enough parts, and so angry at one principal in particular who demanded a higher salary for her contributions to the success of the operas, that he declared, "I'll write an opera in which there will be no principal parts!". In fact he wrote an opera in which the principal parts were nearly equal, in length and memorability. It seems appropriate, then, that the main theme of the piece is equality. Marco and Giuseppe hope to operate a monarchy on republican principals, so "all shall equal be." But this plan fails. In the world of Gilbert and Sullivan, success went to those who recognised and abided by the "natural" hierarchy of classes. To treat everyone equally was a comic idea for Gilbert; as Don Alhambra points out, "When everybody is somebody, then no one's anybody." In the end, monarchy, and therefore order and balance, are restored.
The result is we are still looking for The Duke of Plaza Toro, Don Alhambra(the Grand Inquisitor), Luiz and Antonio. Following the successful autumn concerts and our involvement with the Mcmillan Carol Concert at the Beverley Minster Hull Savoyards are now preparing for the production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘The Gondoliers’ in June 2018
The society will be carrying out auditions on Saturday 13th January 2018 for this Gilbert and Sullivan operetta and as always welcome anyone who would like to participate. in June 2018 a blast of Italian sunshine will be on its way to East Yorkshire with the ‘The Gondoliers’. This operetta is set in Venice and features such catchy numbers as ‘Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes’ and ‘Dance a Cachucha’. Although written in 1889, much of the plot chimes with our time: attempts to create a classless society and a nobleman of questionable character who has turned himself into a public limited company! Along the way are mistaken identities and romantic twists and turns. The show basks in the sunshine of Venice where the gondoliers of the title ply their trade. The production will be at Cottingham and Hornsea.
Gilbert and Sullivan's Kaleidoscope of Culture

For nearly 150 years, Gilbert and Sullivan have pervasively influenced popular culture in the English speaking world. They have addressed gender stereotyping in their operas, with characters such as Katisha of ‘The Mikado’ and the Fairy Queen from ‘Iolanthe’, blurring the lines between masculine and feminine gender conventions of the time. Lines and quotes from Gilbert & Sullivan operas have made their way into everyday usage. Phrases such as ‘short, sharp shock’, "What never? Well, hardly ever!", "A policeman's lot is not a happy one” and ‘let the punishment fit the crime’ are used today, along with ‘Pooh-bah’, a phrase used to describe someone who is self-important or high-ranking, who either exhibits inflated self-importance or has a position and title, but with no real authority.
On Saturday 18th November 2017 the Hull Savoyards will perform the first of three concerts on the theme of Gilbert and Sullivan and culture. “The concerts are the perfect way for Savoyards to play their part in the Hull City of Culture 2017. It will show how Gilbert and Sullivan reflected culture in all its forms. For example, Japanese culture in ‘The Mikado’; the cultured aristocrats of the House of Lords in ‘Iolanthe’; the highbrow culture of Oscar Wilde in ‘Patience’. and everything is illustrated with wonderful songs.”
Audiences throughout Hull and the East Riding will find they can attend the concert near their homes. It’s at several venues including Cottingham, Willerby and Hornsea as follows;
18th November 2017 The Floral Hall, Hornsea
25th November 2017 The Cottingham Civic Hall.
2nd December2017 The Willerby Methodist Church.
The performances commence at 7.30 pm.
