Iolanthe, a most talented and popular fairy has been banished from fairyland because she dared to marry a mortal. Her son, who is half a fairy, has fallen in love with the Lord Chancellor’s ward, Phyllis and their proposed marriage leads to a huge conflict between the fairies led by the indomitable Fairy Queen and the House of Peers. How the impasse is resolved is a tribute to Gilbert’s legal training.
Gilbert’s witty political satire is as relevant today as it was in Victorian times with lines that resonate with current meaning. Gilbert had taken pot shots at the aristocracy before, but in this 'fairy opera,' the House of Lords is lampooned as a bastion of the ineffective, privileged and dim-witted. The political party system and other institutions also come in for a dose of satire. Sullivan’s music is delightful with wonderful solo melodies and stirring chorus work which involves the whole company in rich choral singing.
